Habit 2 - Begin with the End in Mind

“I set goals and make a plan.”

At Giles Junior School, we teach children that beginning with the end in mind means thinking about what they want to achieve and planning the steps that will help them get there.

Children are encouraged to look ahead, understand the purpose of their learning and recognise that progress often comes through small, achievable steps. They also learn that plans can change and that asking for support can help them move forward.

In school, this might look like:

  • Setting a personal or learning goal.

  • Thinking about what a successful piece of work will look like.

  • Breaking a bigger task into manageable steps.

  • Preparing the resources needed for an activity.

  • Reviewing progress and adapting a plan when needed.

We recognise that children need different levels of support to set goals and plan ahead. Through modelling, discussion and encouragement, we help every child develop confidence and a sense of purpose.

At home, you can reinforce this habit by asking: “What would you like to achieve?” or “What steps could help you get there?”
